NVQ Level IV (Assessor Training)

HEART Trust, National Training Agency (HEART/ NTA) and the National Council on Technical Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) have revised the Technical Operating model in order to increase access to training and certification and to get more of the workforce trained and certified.

To accomplish the process of certification, persons, who are already competent, trained and certified and have the relevant technical, interpersonal and management skills as well as the industry expertise, are being targeted to be trained as assessors. These assessors will conduct competency based assessment in the relevant occupational areas as prescribed on the competency standard. The culmination of the training will result in the National Vocational Qualification, NVQ Level IV in assessment certification.

What is THE NVQ-J

The National Vocational Qualification of Jamaica (NVQ-J) is a certification of competence that is recognized Island wide as well as in the CARICOM region. The award of the certification is the proof that the holder of the certification has the skills and knowledge to perform the prescribed task in accordance with workplace requirements. The award is based on the demonstration of competency outlined in the Competency Standard for a qualification plan.

Competency – Based Education and Training (CBET)

The  participants in the NVQ Level IV in assessment (assessors ) are trained to conduct assessment  in a Competency – Based Education and Training (CBET) setting where the focus is on the outcome, i.e. on what a person can actually do or what is expected of an employee in the workplace. Assessment is guided by the CBET philosophy which entails assessing evidence against set criteria and involving the candidates as active participants in the assessment process.

PROGRAMME GOAL

The overall goal of the NVQ Level IV in assessment (Assessor Training) Programme is for participants to be given the competency to be recognized as qualified assessors who will be certified to Conduct Competency - Based Assessment within an established assessment system.

Objectives

On completion of the programme participants should be able to do the following:

  • Analyze competency standards in order to plan conduct and review assessment activities.
  • Plan, conduct and review assessment utilizing a Competency- Based approach.
  • Develop assessment tools to assess related competency.
  • Communicate information relating to work activities
  • Deliver quality customer service
  • Plan and deliver training sessions

TARGET AUDIENCE

The NVQ Level IV in Assessment (Assessor Training) Programme is for persons who are already trained in specific occupational competencies, competent in these areas, certified and have current industry exposure. Persons should also meet the profile of the assessor as established by the National Council on Technical Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET).

Profile of an Assessor

  1. Personal and Interpersonal Attributes
  2. Management Skills
  3. Technical Skills
  4. Currency of Industry Experience  .

Qualifications The assessor must be competent in the knowledge and skills in the area to be assessed as well as in assessment practices in technical and vocational education and training.  Certification and qualifications must be in the area or closely related to the area being assessed.

Assessor must have qualifications one level above units being applied for. Minimum qualifications include:

Level 5- Professional Licenses/ Post Graduate degree

Level 4 – Degree, Post Graduate diploma/ Certificate/ NVQ Level 5

Level 3- NVQ Level 4 and Associate degree

Level 1-2- Professional certificate and NVQ level 2-3/ Diploma.

Career Path

On successful completion of the NVQ Level IV in Assessment (Assessor Training) Programme, candidates are recommended for registration on the National Qualification Register (NQR) by the National Council on Technical Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET).Upon confirmation of registration  candidates can conduct assessment for an Accredited Training Organizations (ATO) in the areas in which he / she is registered.

Accessing the Programme

Participants must be competent in the knowledge and skills of the area in which he / she will conduct assessment.. Certification and qualification must be in the area or closely related to the area to be assessed. Participants must have qualification one level above units being applied for.

  • Diploma in area of competency
  • Degree in area of competency
  • Post Graduate Diploma/ Degree in area of competency
