BEd. in Applied Technology

The VTDI’s Bachelor of Education in Applied Technology is designed to produce competent technical teachers for the teaching profession. Persons who have successfully completed this programme will be able to perform at higher levels of efficiency and will be able to prepare students at the secondary level for successful engagement in the twenty-first century workforce. Students will not only be empowered to employ relevant teaching methodologies in order to cater to the varied needs of their students, but they will also acquire the requisite technical competencies in their respective areas of specialization.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission into this programme, the candidate must satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • Possess at least five CSEC subjects or their equivalent, including passes in English Language, Mathematics at grade 1, 2 or 3 (grade 3 after 1998) or
  • Possess a Level 2 in the field of specialization and at least two CSEC subjects or their equivalent, including English Language and Mathematics at grade 1, 2 or 3 (grade 3 after 1998)

NB* Advanced Placement

Holders of VTDI’s TVET Instructor Training Diploma are eligible for advanced placement into the programme. It should be noted however that applicants who have acquired VTDI’s Diploma up to 2003 will have to pursue bridging courses before they can pursue the Advanced Placement courses of the B.Ed. - Applied Technology programme.

The programme is offered on a full time and part time basis on the main campus of the VTDI, which is located at Gordon Town Road, Kingston 6

Programme Schedule

Full time:             Four years

Part time:            Four to five years (depending on specialization)

Advanced Placement: A maximum of two additional years (depending on specialization and modality)

Part-time: Semesters 1 & 2 -   Typically four evenings per week, 5:00pm – 8:00pm 

Summer Semester - Mondays to Fridays, 8am – 5pm

Full-time: Semesters 1 & 2 - Mondays to Fridays, 8am – 5pm

Industrial Attachment/Teaching Practice

  • Industrial attachment: Students are required to fulfil at least 360 hours of industry training over a three year period.
  • Teaching Practice:  All students are required to complete two semesters of Teaching Practice.

o    Teaching Practice I      -               4 weeks

o    Teaching Practice II     -               8 weeks

All students, part-time and full-time, are expected to make arrangements that would make them available to fulfil this requirement. Please note also that there are specific courses that must be successfully completed before one is eligible to undertake Teaching Practice I and Teaching Practice II. They are as follows.

About the Summer Semester

Full-time year 1 students are required to attend summer classes in the first year. However, part-time students are required summer classes in years 1 to 4.

In the summer, students are required to attend classes on Mondays to Fridays during the period 9:00am to 5:00pm. Students must ensure that they are able to make the necessary arrangements to attend these classes.
